My debt was $45k when i left NZ 6 years ago. Now its 72k and i had for a few years made repayments regularly. They love doing you over with penalties, interest and fees when you leave NZ. The student loan scheme turns NZ students into prisioners when they graduate. You think its all cool aged 20 that you will be earning 70k when you get out. Think again: 1 was the only person in my graduating class that got a job remotely related to the field I studied and I was by no means that good. It was luck and it stupidly kept me 'gaining exoperience' (what was i thinking??)in New Zealand for 2 years earning $400 a week. Pathetic.
There simply are not the job ops or money in NZ for the amount of people who graduate. Not by a loooooooong shot. 1 hospital cannot employ 10,000 doctors!
And yet if you go overseas to earn money and try and pay off your loan you get penalized like you would leaving an unregistered car on the street side. Its enough to make you write off the country you love and never return, which is a sad shame because I do love New Zealand.
