So AUSA (Auckland University Students Association) is rewarding $5k to a student, if a citizens arrest is made on US Secretary of State Condi Rice when she visits us.
As a student association, is this really their core business? Does arresting Condi help students in any way?
It's crazy shit like this, which casts doubt on the credibility of Student representatives/politicians, and really hampers the effectiveness of our core responsibility, which is to represent students at our respective Universities.
I will give $5 to any University Student Association which stays out of issues which have completely no relevance to the welfare of students ,or maybe I wont. But you get my point. Boo Yah!

Just wondering....what would YOU do if your university had invited a "known" war criminal to speak at your school? Does inviting Condi to speak to the AU students help them in any way? . If this issue has "completely no relevance to the welfare of students", why the hell was she invited to speak in the first place? You might want to ask your University's administration how much her little irrelevant visit is costing your school. I assume they are picking up the tab for her travel expenses, including a speaker's fee.
Do me a favor, if there's a Q & A session after her lecture, can you please ask her why 9/11 happened on her watch as NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR; why the US went to war against a country that didn't attack it and why US standing in the world has gone down the tubes during her watch.
In my opinion, Little Miss Smarty Pants has never been held accountable for what she has done (shoe shopping in NYC while New Orleans drowns) and what she has NOT done.
Congratulations AUSU! It's about time these issues made national headlines in the United States! And so have you. Bravo!
Whilst on the subject of alleged criminals why do we look at who in the AUSA is behind the arrest proposal, amongst others, AUSA international affairs officer Omar Hamed.
Who is Omar Hamed?,
He’s an anarchist political activist He was born in Greece to European and Palestinian parents. He has also been involved in the Palestinian rights group Students for Justice in Palestine and helps run an activist social center in Auckland called A Space Inside. He is also a member of the Auckland Anarchist Collective.
One of seventeen people arrested in police raids that occurred in October 2007, it is alleged he was in possession of firearms in the Ruatoki Valley. He is currently facing three charges of illegal possession of a firearm and one of unlawful possession of Molotov cocktails.
and Omar is saying he doesn’t want Condi in NZ? What a fricken cheek!
Hey there. This is James from the Exec, long time reader, first time poster. I will write a more detailed reply to this issue, but I would like to say that I disagree with Justin's position on this issue, and I am not sure whether the rest of the exec is for or against. I think that debate on the issue is relevant and appreciated however.
yay for diversity, debate & freedom of speech! I guess it is only natural to ask the floor, what their definition of student welfare + representation, and simply state their view on why AUSA was right or wrong in advocating such a stance.
The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force handles the investigation and prosecution of drug cases, and drug-related offenses, with emphasis on major illegal drug importation and distribution organizations. The Task Force consists of AUSAs from this office, along with Coordinators from DEA, FBI, IRS, INS, ATF, Customs and the U.S. Marshals Service.
